Denver, Colorado - With four touchdowns in as many drives to start the game against Stanford on Friday night, Colorado coach Deion Sanders finally had the explosive start he desired. But after a strong start, the Buffaloes saw a tremendous collapse, which presented a new type of issue.
After leading 29-0 at halftime and then surrendering touchdowns on all eight Stanford possessions in the second half and OT, Colorado fell in double overtime, 46-43.
"It really was a really simple message (at halftime)," Stanford coach Troy Taylor remarked on ESPN following the game. 'It wasn't a very good first half,' I thought. I'm interested in how you compete. Actually, that was it.
Elic Ayomanor, a Stanford receiver, recorded 13 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns to help the Cardinal to their largest comeback victory in school history.
According to Ayomanor, "everybody came together as a whole." It wasn't just me trying; the entire squad really put up an effort. That was the key to our victory.
After a plethora of errors, namely 17 penalties for 127 yards, Colorado drops to 4-3. Ashton Daniels, the quarterback for Stanford, improved their record to 2-5 by completing 27 of 45 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns, all of which came in the second half.
Taylor stated, "I'm just really proud of them. To be down 29-nothing, on the road against a really good team, just to continue to compete and believe, the number of times when they could have succumbed."
